Organisation and relevant experience: School of Business and Engineering Vaud (HEIG-VD) with its 2000 students is the largest school partner of the HES-SO (University of Applied Sciences, Western Switzerland). The campus of the HEIG-VD is based in Yverdon-les-Bains and is perfectly integrated into the economic environment. The HEIG-VD provides high level education for engineers and managers. At the HEIG-VD, theoretical knowledge is continuously linked with its implementation. The teaching provided by professors mainly from the economic sector and industry, encourages students to adopt a practical approach. They progress gradually to engineer or economist status, ready to create, conceive, innovate, control, frame or even to found their own company. The HEIG-VD considers the transfer of knowledge to the economic environment as particularly important. The HEIG-VD Institutes are actively involved in the economy and industry through new product development, innovative solutions and management practices. The “Institut de Genie thermique (IGT) was founded in 1991 by Osmann SARI in mechanical Engineering Department. The R&D projects, which are mainly defined by the industrial needs, are localised in the areas of Heating, air conditioning, Refrigeration, Heat and mass transfer, Working fluids (Ice Slurry, CO2 Hydrates slurry, PCM and PCS), natural refrigerants, Regulations and Solar Thermal engineering.

Tasks: The Laboratory will carry out optimisation of smart window technology and coating technology, develop the smart window technology for retrofitting, test the technology under controlled conditions, measure building energy use before retrofitting, retrofit technologies and solutions into three flats, monitor and demonstrate the performance of retrofitted flat in an alpine European climate, survey occupants’ acceptance and analyse socio-economic benefits of retrofitting flats

Key personnel and relevant experience:

Professor Osmann SARI is Head of the Industrial Thermic & Systems (TiS) Laboratory “TiS” of Institute of Thermal Engineering at the Haute Ecole d’ingénierie et de Gestion du canton de Vaud. He was a mechanical engineer at Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne Switzerland (EPF-L), 1978, RAD engineer at Asea Brown Bovery (ABB) Baden, 1979; obtained PhD degree of EPF-L in 1989; Head of Heat Transfer Group at EPFL (1989). He has been Project leader of several national and international projects applying phase change materials and ice slurry since 1996, and on magnetic refrigeration at room temperature. He is a Member of the Working Party “Phase Change Materials and Slurries for refrigeration and air conditioning; and on member on the international scientific committee, Member of the Working party on Magnetic refrigeration at room Temperature of the International Institute of Refrigeration (IIR – IIF) and Active member of the Swiss Association of refrigeration, the EU EUREKA project FIFE (Fine-Crystalline ice: Fundamentals Engineering and the EU project PAMELA (Phase Change Materiel Slurries And their commercial Applications). Professor Sari has organised five international scientific conferences and business forum and won the first prize of the Swiss Technology Award, special prize of Swiss Society, special prize of ABB and special prize of Office federal de l’Energie (OFEN).

Dr Jin HU is a Research Engineer at the Institute of Thermal Engineering, University of Applied Sciences of Western Switzerland (research on CO2 gas hydrate slurry for air-conditioning and CO2 hydrate for CO2 gas storage and cold storage).
